Campus Heroes [Week 7]
First week of the BCS polls with Oklahoma at #1, Ohio State makes a major misstep and on a personal note Syracuse got the stuffing kicked out of them It does my heart good to watch Ohio State fall down and watch Boise State rise up. There were SEVEN ranked upsets! That means there were a lot of great performances to earn those tough victories (and that campus zeros should be fun as well.)
Campus Heroes
5. Washington Huskies QB/WR Combo: The Jake Locker to Jermain Kearse hookup unreal in their 35-34 win over Oregon State this weekend. For Locker it was a big game because a lot of NFL and College Football annalists were starting to question his high NFL draft stock. He hushed all his critics going 21-of-35 for 286yds, 5TD and 1INT while picking up 60yds on the ground. 146 of his yards and 4TD where all to Kearse! Jermain Kearse averaged a whopping 16.9 yards per catch and a 45 yard touchdown bomb for his longest catch. Washington gets back to .500 at 3-3 and Oregon State gets knocked out of the AP Top 25.
4. Mississippi State Bulldogs QB, Chris Relf: No, his 33 passing yards aren't what put him in here. Maybe, it's not even his 82yds and 1TD rushing that got him at #4. He made the Campus Heroes list because he lead the Bulldogs offense to a great win for them in the SEC and didn't do what John Brantley did... throw a big INT. And in a game where offense was at a premium Relf's 125 combined passing and rushing yards were enough for State to get the big 10-7 win over the then ranked Florida Gators. Miss State is now 5-2 overall and 2-2 in the SEC.
3. Texas Longhorns' Defense: The Nebraska Cornhuskers were averaging 41.8 points per game before they were blindsided by an unranked Texas' defense. The Huskers where held only to 17 points and 202 total yards! This was a offense that was 302 ON THE GROUND PER GAME! Texas also corralled the offense wonder that is NEB QB Taylor Martinez to under 100yds through the air and ground. They also racked up 2 forced fumbles, 6 tackles for loss and countless pressures on the QB. There is no way that Mac Brown was going to let his team stay under the gun for a third game.
2. Wisconsin Badgers RB, John Clay: Ohio State was #1 for all of a week and Wisconsin made sure that they wouldn't stay there. John Clay totaled 21 carries for 104yds and 2TD in the Badgers' big time 31-10 WIN over the Buckeyes. Ohio State was supposed to be the Juggernaut that could hold on to the #1 spot and defend their chance to play in the BCS national title game... guess not. John Clay plays with some serious power, hits the gaps with a low center of gravity and goes for contact instead of running out of bounds to add a few yards here and there. Lets not forget that a good RB means that he has a great offensive line in front of him.
1. Auburn Tigers QB, Cameron Newton: This is the second time he has landed on campus hero list at #1. I think while most people were ready to hand off the Heisman to Michigan QB Denard Robinson I saw much greater potential in Newton. Sure, it helps that Ryan Mallet went down to help propel the Tigers to a win but, Newton was a much bigger X factor. 140 yards and 1 touchdown through the air and 188 yards and 3 TOUCHDOWNS on the ground. He is like a much bigger Jason Campbell back when he was a at Auburn... and lucky for Cameron Newton he doesn't have to play for the Oakland Raiders. Auburn is 7-0 and sits at 5th in the AP and 4th in the BCS. Watch out for these Tigers!
Honorable Mentions:
Cincinnati QB, Zach Collaros: 18/28, 275yds, 5TD, 2INT (35-27 W)
USC QB, Matt Barkley: 25/37, 352yds, 5TD (48-14 W)
Wake Forest RB, Josh Harris: 20car, 241yds, 2TD, 87LG (52-21 L)
Oklahoma Sooners RB, DeMarco Murray: 20car, 112yds, 2TD (52-0 W)
Texas Longhorns QB, Garrett Gilbert: 11car, 71yds, 2TD (20-13 W)
