Campus Zeros [Week 9]
Sorry to deprive you of Campus Zeros last week due to a combo of work, Halloween fever, and a laptop from 2005, FUMBLE! But, not this week! No players singled out this week! It was good old fashioned team effort that got them to the dignified Campus Zeros list this week. Who made the cut?
Campus Zeros
5. Miami Hurricanes Four-Passers Combo: QB Jacory Harris out, I mean way out, so out he actually maybe a permanent part of the turf at Scott Stadium. He left he game after tossing a pick. Who is next? Spencer Whipple, 22yds, and 2INT later... next! Freshman Stephen Morris, 2-touchdowns... but 2 picks as well. Even RB Graig Cooper got a chance to toss the rock, luckily no INT. All in all, 18/42 (42.9%), 269yds, 2TD, 5INT AGAINST THE VIRGINIA CAVALIERS! The Canes now unranked, 5-3, 3-2 in the ACC and Randy Shannon isn't looking like the redemption coach anymore.
4. Michigan State Rushing 'attack': Spartans were trying to run the table to get into the BCS title game... well you can take the word 'run' out of that phrase as well as their shot to be in the title game. In a very important game where you need to set up the run to keep the Iowa Hawkeyes' D on edge... well that was a nice thought. SIX rushers, including QB Andrew Maxwell, combined for 20car, 31yds, 1.6ypc and 0TD... how ground shattering [wocka wocka]. Have fun in the Comfort Suites Dominos Home Depot Construction Bowl, how prestigious.
3. Penn State Nittany Lions 'HC', Joe Paterno: This is going to be a very unpopular post... I do not believe that the NCAA is still counting wins for Paterno. The man is a legend no doubt but has no idea what the hell is going on during the game. He probably thinks that John Cappelletti is out their taking the hand-offs in the wishbone offense. I expect him to say at the halftime interview "Kerry [Collins] is really having a solid game for us." My point is I do not understand why he gets credit for winning. The same goes for Bobby Bowden. Towards the end of his career we all know he was there as a figure head, the word coach is loosely associated with their actual title which should be "Recruiting Figure Head Puppet."
2. Washington State Huskies QB, Jake Locker: So, where is that amazing 1st round talent? Mel [Kiper] I am waiting. Yes, I realize that he was hurt during the Standford beat-down but just on basic QB mechanics I am just not seeing it. 14-8 TD/INT ratio is not #1 overall pick material. Nor is he putting his team on his shoulders attempting to lead them to victory. Sure, Locker doesn't have the 'toys' that Kellen Moore or Cam Newton do BUT neither did Ben Rothlisberger at Miami (Ohio) or Joe Flacco at Delaware.
1. Missouri Tigers Pass-Pro/Blitz Pickup: You could blame this Missouri loss on their rush-D that went on vacation, or QB Blaine Gabbert BUT from what I saw the biggest problem was Missouri's pass protection. Who are Bruce Walker and Josh Henson? They are the Tigers' OL coaches and they need to get their linemen working on their step-punch. They let up 6 sacks, a multitude of QB rushes/pressures that eventually led to a INT. If you pride yourself as a great passing team you NEED a good blindside tackle, a good hinge center and a RB/FB that can pick up the extra man. I saw NONE of this in their 31-17 loss.
'Honorable' Mentions
USC Trojans' Defense: 599yds allowed, 6.2ypc, 7TD (53-32 L)
Akron Zips: 0-5 Mid-American Conference, 0-9 overall
"High and Mighty" Gators/Longhorns: 9-7 overall
Commercials [Budlight]: 'Ultimate tailgate car' and 'How to work without missing the game' was funny in early September, please make new ones!
Chattanooga v. Auburn, Week 10: Really? There aren't even point spreads on this week 10 bloodbath.
