Campus Heroes [Week 6]

#1 falls from the top. Ohio State gets a bump to #1, I have no idea why. And Miami showed me that they are still a terrible team that's undisciplined and can't handle pressure situations. Amongst all of that there were A LOT of great performances that get on my Campus Hero list for Week 6. If you think I have missed anyone make sure to let me know so I can keep an eye on them in the up and coming weeks. Finally, I am going to add honorable mentions at the bottom of the Hero and Zero blogs.

Campus Heroes
5. Illinois Fighting Illini's Defense: Just when you thought that Illinois was on its way to college football obscurity they come up with a win like this IN Happy Valley. The Illini held 'the Juggernaut' Penn State to a lowly 13 points and 235 total yards. The crown jewel of this defensive stand was a 16yd interception return by Nate Bussy for a TD in the second quarter and two clutch sacks in the 4th. It's not so much that they stomped a true freshman QB but that they held he Nittany Lions to 14.2% on 3rd down conversions and put RB Evan Royster in check as part of their 33-13 win.

4. Air Force Fighting Falcons RB, Asher Clark: It may have not been the most staggering of performances but it was a solid one. It's always nice to have Army/Navy/Air Force in the top 25 and he is a big reason why. Clark rushed for 125yds and 1TD on only 17car in Air Force's win as a ranked team over Colorado State. Overall the Falcons had a grand total of 248yds on the ground which should pave the way to a bowl other than the Eagle Bank Bowl.

3. Nebraska Cornhuskers QB, Taylor Martinez: Coming into this game Nebraska and Kansas State were both undefeated; Taylor made short work of that record. He amassed 241yds and 4TD on the ground alone! And through the air he went 5/7 128yds and 1TD! Most impressive? NO TURNOVERS! He made all of America turn their heads away from Michigan QB Denard Robinson [who may make an appearance in the zeros... foreshadowing] and set their gaze on Martinez. Nebraska is #5 in the AP poll and has yet to lose, it will be interesting how they fare against a up-and-down Texas squad at home next week.

2. Standford Cardinal WR, Doug Baldwin: Why not Stanford QB Andrew Luck or RB Stepfan Taylor? Well... they fumbled a combined three times. Meanwhile, Baldwin had a clean game with 8rec for 98yds and 2TD, NO fumbles. It was a combined ground and air attack that put away those pesky Trojans but Baldwin stood out being Luck's number one target. Surprisingly, USC stayed in the game but Baldwin's second TD catch was a big scoring separator in the 4th quarter when points where at a premium. The Cards are now 2-1 in the Pac-10.

1. Michigan State Spartans HC, Mark Dantonio: This man had a heart attack a few weeks ago THEN had a clot removed from he leg after a follow up check up and still was coaching when Sparty took on Big Blue this weekend! His defense took the air out of the Robinson-run offense and had three picks in the win. Also, MSU stayed out of the turnover category and was +3 on the day picking off Robinson three times. Finally, MSU had a grand total of 536yds on once Syracuse head coach [shutter] Greg Robinson's  Michigan defense. The Spartans are somehow only #13 in the AP poll but I am sure it's only up for them.

Honorable mentions:
USC WR, Robert Woods: 12rec, 224yds, 3Td (37-35 L)
OK State QB, Brandon Weeden: 29/47, 351yds, 5TD, 3INT (54-28 W)
S. Carolina QB, Stephen Garcia: 17/20, 201yds, 3TD, 1INT (35-21W)
FSU RB, Chris Thompson: 14car, 158yds, 1TD (45-17 W)
AUB QB, Cameron Newton: 13/21, 210yds, 1INt, 28car, 198yds, 4TD (37-34W)
