Campus Heroes (Week 5)
This week went pretty much 'according to plan'...unless you are a Stanford fan. We are getting very close to the meat of the season where you finally get that great inter-conference play in the SEC, Big East, Pac-12 (Or is it Pac-10? Or Pac-13?) So, that being said this should be the last week of gaudy numbers and cruise control wins for teams like Oregon and Alabama. That being said here are your Week 5 Campus Heroes.
5. Washington Huskies' Offensive Line: This line was said to be battered, under-maned and underdeveloped... I think not. In their 17-13 upset win over #8 Stanford they helped pave the way for RB Bishop Sankey who had 20car, 144yds and a TD. And kept a great pocket for second year QB Keith Price who was only sacked once. Though Price's performance was par at best he was still able to hit WR Kasen Williams for 10rec, 129yds and a TD. Great team effort! The Huskies also converted 50% on 3rd down (4/14) and went two of three on fourth down as well.
4. Benny Cunningham, Middle-Tenn, RB, SR: 27car, 217yds, 5TD. Now, this is Middle-Tennessee against Georgia Tech not some WAC or Sun Belt conference team here. Cunningham helped the Blue Raiders knock off the reeling Yellow Jackets 49-28. In his previous games he only had 34yds against McNeese State and 57yds against Memphis. So, going into this game he only had 91 rushing yards on the year!
3. Kieth Marshall/Todd Gurley, Georgia, RBs: 34car, 294yds, 5TD. These to back accounted for more than half of the Bulldogs entire offense in their shoot-out 51-44 win over SEC opponent Tennessee. Georgia is now 5-0 and an impressive 3-0 in the SEC (AKA the NFL of college football.) This ground game will have to show up again next week when they face #6 South Carolina in prime time (Saturday, 7pm, ESPN.) I normally talk about last week... but I just can't WAIT to watch this one (By the way I am taking UGA by 8.)
2. Stedman Bailey, WVU, WR, JR: 13rec, 303yds, 5TD. With Bailey at #2 one can only guess who is at #1 for this week. But, with that being said this is an amazing performance by the JR WR. And it isn't like he was just blowing the top off the defense, his touchdowns came on passes that ranged from 2yds all the way to that 87yd bomb that came in the 4th quarter. This is a dangerous and dynamic team that I am going to start calling the East-Coast-Oregon.
1. Geno Smith, WVU, QB, SR: 45/51, 88% Comp, 656yds, 8TD. WHOA! I failed to mention in talking about Bailey that these unreal performances came against #25 Baylor! It was a real team, not like when a Bama or Texas put up 3,000yds on a Youngstown State (by the way they are the Penguins for anyone that cares.) WVU is 4-0 and are being lead by this Heisman frontrunner, it may take a lot to slow them down and I don't see anyone in the Big 12 that can.
Honorable Mentions:
Taysom Hill, BYU, QB, FR: 12/21, 11yds, 2TD, 1INT 15car, 143yds, 1TD (47-0 W)
Stephen Morris, Miami U, QB, JR: 26/49, 566yds, 5TD, 1INT (44-36 W)
Zac Dysert, Miami (Ohio), QB, SR: 34/49, 516yds, 6TD (56-49 W)
