NFL Mid Season Awards
Time to hand out some fictional mid-season hardware. We will me taking a look at Off MVP, Def MVP, Off Rookie of the Year, Def Rookie of the year... and you know because it's me the un-MVPs so far this season (in the next blog.)
Offensive MVP: Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons (8-0)- The stats aren't ground shattering but they are solid: 206/299 (68.9% comp), 2360yds, 17TD, 6INT. And even more important they haven't lost this year and are the lone undefeated team. BUT, lets take a look at the records of their opponents this year 29-41. Really, the hardest team they faced all season was a Denver team that wasn't running on all 4 cylinders just yet. Which brings me to my runner up... Peyton Manning. His stats: 203/292 (69.4% comp), 2404yds, 20TD, 6INT BUT a 5-3 record. So, more yards, more TDs, better comp % and may funnier in commercials, need I say more? The only reason he isn't my true #1 is because they started out rough and have a few losses.
Defensive MVP: J.J. Watt, DE, Houston Texans (7-1)- This guy is a offensive coordinator's worst nightmare because they know they will have to waste a TE to chip this guy as he flies off the edge. Now, they have to work their entire passing game around making sure that Watt isn't choke slamming their franchise QB. Watt has 31 tackles (2nd on team), 10.5 sacks (leads the NFL), 10 pass deflections (which is more than 90% of the DBs in the NFL!), and 2 fumble recoveries. He has already doubled his sack total from his rookie year and will only continue to add to that total. My runner up is Tim Jennings (DB, Chicago). He has 42 tackles (2nd on team), 6INT (leads the NFL), 1TD, 15 pass deflections. Jennings has been in the league for 7yrs but is really making a HUGE impact for them on that already stout D.
Offensive ROY: Doug Martin, RB, Tampa Bay Buccaneers (4-4)- During his rookie year Martin already has: 154car, 794yds, 7TD (20rec, 245yds, 1TD) and most importantly 0 fumbles! Plus, in a QB driven league it is hard to stick out and he has. No just in his amazing performance agianst the Raiders last week but the fact he came into training camp, beat out a veteran RB, leared a new offensive system and is still being able to produce these numbers with a banged up OL... and did I mention he hasn't turned the ball over yet? And my runner up is most likely everyone's pick for ROY, Andrew Luck. He has thrown: 190/336 (56.6% comp), 2404yds, 10TD and 8INT (oh yeah and 8 fumbles.) The Colts are 5-3 and in those wins Luck has only thrown 2INTs so when he is on, the entire team is on. And lets not forget he had to come into Indy and fill the HUGE shoes left by 'The Sheriff.'
Defensive ROY: Chandler Jones, DE, New England Patriots (5-3)- No shock here that Pats draft an underrated player that ends up over achieving. Jones has: 33 tackles (4th on team), 6 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. He played his college ball at Syracuse that doesn't produce any many players as USC, Bama etc... but puts one to two guys a draft that are solid starters (IE Mike Williams, Jameel McClain etc...). And he is making his name in a division with lots of great DEs. Running up? Mark Barron (DB, Tampa Bay.) You are asking "Bias much? Two Bucs and one Syracuse guy, really?" well, you're wrong if you think that. These guys are all legit, period. Barron has: 48 tackles (3rd on team), 1INT, 1FF, 7 pass deflections and his one hell of a hard hitter (just ask Steve Smith of the Carolina Panthers.) He and ultra veteran Ronde Barber have been playing well together in the run... pass the Bucs rank 32 in the league...
