Campus Heroes [Week 9]
Other than #5 Michigan State going down nothing really earth shattering in the college football world. So, that would make for a rather pedestrian Week 9 Campus Heroes, right? Nope. Two of the top 5 heroes were top tier quarterbacks that caught, yes caught, a touchdown pass! As Herm Edwards would say WHY NOT?! And as always Campus Zeros are sure to follow this week (sorry about last week's fumble.)
Campus Heroes
5. Nebraska Cornhuskers RB, Roy Helu Jr.: On only 28 carries he was able to tally up 307yds, 11ypc and of course three scores. Helu accounted for 70.7% of the entire Huskers offense that day [including a 14 yard reception.] And with QB combo Taylor Martinez/Zac Lee on the rocks they needed Helu to step up now more then ever. Missouri was looking good to be a BCS dark horse but the Huskers made short work of that. But, where any good running back is, there is an equally great offensive line. These bulls in the trenches are the reason that any RB/WR/QB gets a shot at the Heisman.
4. Boise State Broncos QB, Kellen Moore: I don't know how he hasn't been in this top 5 more often but he should have been. Boise State is constantly looked down upon no matter how much they blow out teams or knock off ranked opponents. But, the field general keeping this blue turf brigade going is QB Kellen Moore. Sure, this great 20/28, 298yd, 2TD, 1INT performance came against Louisiana Tech and the numbers really don't stand out BUT what was really big was the fact that Moore caught at 7-yard touchdown pass! 49-20 Broncos win and they still are undefeated at 7-0... please be in the BCS championship game with Oregon!
3. Oregon State Ducks RB, LaMichael James: Another 'duh' that could have been in the top 5 every week. A lot of people were split on this game; some thought USC was going to be the death of Oregon's run at a National Championship while others, like myself, knew that the Trojans could NOT contain this wild stallion offense. James and Auburn QB are my jockeying players for the Heisman this year. James picked up 239yds and 3TD on 36 carries, averaging 6.6ypc. What's the most impressive? 1yd away from hanging 600 yards of total offense on Lane Kiffin's and father Monte Kiffin's defense!
2. Auburn Tigers QB, Cameron Newton: What a shock right? But, here is some full disclosure on Newton. In my opinion: Yes he is a great college QB, but he still has a lot to learn about being a better passer, so Mel Kiper Jr. relax please. But, no matter what his pro-career may be he is still lighting it up RIGHT NOW for Auburn. Just over 200yds and 2TD isn't blowing up any record book BUT he does not throw picks and just like his counterpart at Boise State, Kellen Moore, he caught at TD pass as well. He put up the Tiger's first points snagging a 20yd pass from WR Kodi Burns.
1. Iowa Hawkeyes Defense: If you read my blogs you know I like me a good defensive performance and Iowa stonewalled the MSU Spartans holding them to 227yds and 6pts! On the stats side of it they had 1 sack, 5 tackles for loss and most importantly three interceptions. One of those picks went for 6pts when CB Micah Hyde took it 66yds to the house. By the way, the 6pts that Michigan did score didn't come until 14:56 in the 4th quarter and the 2pt conversion failed. MSU and Iowa both have one loss in the Big Ten... it should be an interesting finish.
Honorable Mentions
Oklahoma QB, Landry Jones: 32/46, 453yds, 4TD, 14.2ypa (43-10 W)
Oklahoma WR, Ryan Broyles: 9rec, 208yds, 3TD, 23.1ypc (43-10 W)
Iowa QB, Ricky Stanzi: 11/15, 190yds, 3TD, 56LNG (37-6 W)
Arkansas QB, Ryan Mallet: 27/44, 409yds, 3TD, 15.1ypa (49-14 W)
Oregon QB, Darren Thomas: 19/32, 288yds, 4TD, 1INT (53-32 W)
