Happy NFL Week 8 to All!
Holy sh&*# it's October 29th already. Is that blowing anyone's mind right now? Upside, discount Halloween Candy on Wednesday. Downside, 57 days till Christmas and 64 days until 2018.... that... that can't be right.
*Sobs uncontrollably*
Anyway, let's talk (or more like I type, you read) NFL. There are three games in the next 48hrs that will openly affect 6 different teams. Here's a hint, it has nothing to do with that dumpster fire of a game kicking off in London right now. *side note* Who the f*&^ in the league office thought this would be a good game?! Was the conversation like:
"What do people want in the morning Bob?"
"I don't know Ted. Good NFL teams duking it out? Free coffee? Unlimited Boar's Head Bacon? Yeah! Let's do that. We'll call it the Bacon Bowl and only teams with a over .500 record in the last century can be invited!"
"Whoa there Bob! That's forward thinking. Let's just give the people what they want. The Cleveland Browns at 9:30am, the Great Value Brand of NFL Franchises. No bacon. No coffee. Just a lot of confused people from the UK watching football and just buckets and buckets of Pepsi ads that everyone has been watching since the beginning of August!"
1. Raiders (3-4) at Bills [-2.5] (4-2) 1pm CBS- Somehow the Bills are 4-2 and the the apocalypse hasn't commenced. At least we can all take comfort in knowing right now at 9:28am there is some Bills fan chugging half Fireball half Labatt mix off his friend's ass in the parking lot. *BLEH* Meanwhile, eeerrrbody's preseason favorite, the Oakland Raiders, are sitting at 3-4. So, my question is will the Bills know how to continue being a successful team? They haven't seen double digit wins since 1999. That was also the last time they saw any post season action as well (coached by Wade Philips and QB'ed by Mr. Flakes himself.) What's the verdict? I think, if they keep playing how they are playing the Bills MAY, just MAY, sneak out 9 wins. The problem is you'll need at least 10-11 wins to snag a WC this year and with your #1 targeted receiver (TE) Charles Clay on the mend, it will be a tad harder. What about the Raiders? With a loss today their season maybe royally f*&'ed and they may finish... 6-10. EEEEK! How? The Chiefs win the West, Broncos (yes you're reading that right) sneak out a wild card berth and Oakland duels not to be last with the Chargers.
Bills- 27 Raiders-23
2. Panthers (4-3) at Buccaneers [-1.5] (2-4) 1pm FOX- It's like I know my reading audience is all from Central NY and Charlotte or something... *cough* The NFC South was pegged to be one of the premier divisions this year. Going into Week 8 it boosts a limp 14-12 record and ruled by the 4-2 Saints. Neat. The Panthers and the Buccaneers are oddly similar on offense despite the records. No ground game to be spoken of and solid franchise QBs. BUT, the Bucs boast the #1 passing attack in the NFL and the Panthers are 16th. On the other side of the ball it's a different story:
Carolina- 3rd in Pass D and 4th in rush = 5th best in the NFL. Tampa- eh... 30th in Pass D and T-17 (SEA) in rush = 23rd overall.
The fact that Tampa is missing three key defensive backs going into today's game doesn't help either. So, what's the call Paul? (God that's lame, can we forget I typed that?) IF the Panthers are able to establish the run, which has been VERY difficult for them, then the Bucs are screwed. This opens up play action/boots/waggles, all the stuff that Cam Newton excels at. BUT, if Tampa gets out ahead of Carolina early I don't think the Panthers have that kind of offense to catch up and then go point for point with that Bucs' passing attack. A win for the Panthers and they go to the top of the NFC South. A win for the Buccaneers and they are right back in the chase and stop a 3 game losing skid. A loss for the Panthers and I fear Charlotte may riot and lynch Mike Shula. A loss for the Buccaneers and the jolly roger may come down the mast and a white flag may come up.
Buccaneers- 28 Panthers-27
3. Broncos (3-3) at Chiefs [-7] (5-2) 8:30pm ESPN 10/30- Slowly running out of steam and my hangover is kicking in so this one will be brief. In years past this looks like an obvious pick with KC as a 7pt favorite at home IN Arrow Head ON Monday Night Football. Duh right? Well... not anymore. This year the NFL has been such a cluster f*&^ and I am ok with that. Two things are happening, one all the franchise players of the 2000's will cease to exist. First lets look at the ages of all those old war horses we know and love:
Tom Brady 40 (Patriots)
Drew Brees 38 (Saints)
Carson Palmer 37 (Cardinals)
Eli Manning 36 (Giants)
Philip Rivers 35 (Chargers)
Ben Rothlisberger 35 (Steelers)
Now who are the young guns that will be these guys in 10 years? The guys that will be the faces on the commercials, the ticket stubs, Madden Covers, billboards etc:
Deshaun Watson 22 (Texans)
Jared Goff 22 (Rams)
Marcus Mariota 23 (Titans)
Dak Prescott 23 (Cowboys)
Jameis Winston 23 (Buccaneers)
Carson Wentz 24 (Eagles)
So... what's the point? The point is I believe things will continue to shift and the years of the Steelers, Patriots, Giants, Saints (All Super Bowl winners) leading the pack may (or already have) start to falter. And all the teams that have been stacking those early first round picks and dealing 500 records will start to come around. It's about time. And it's PART of the facelift the NFL needs.
Oh F^$%! Denver and Kansas City! Right...
Chiefs-28 Broncos- 20
