Three Things to Take Away from Super Bowl 50 (Part II)
No better way to get over hump day than with an amateur sports blog! In Part II of 'The Things to Take Away from Super Bowl 50' I will be talking about how defenses really win championships. Cliche? Sure. But, it's cliche and over used for a reason... it's true and these numbers don't lie. Also, not one to normally care but one Super Bowl ad this year was great! I'll tell you which one at the end of Part II.
Since 1986 the #1 defense reached the Super Bowl 9 times and the #1 offense 6 times really, 8-to-5 because the 96' Packers were both the #1 O/D.) In those Super Bowls with the #1 DEF the MVP 6 of the 8 times was a defense/special teams player. They are:
2015- (DEN) Von Miller-Linebacker
2013- (SEA) Malcolm Smith- Linebacker
2002- (TB) Dexter Jackson- Safety
2000- (BAL) Ray Lewis- Linebacker
*1996- (GB) Desmond Howard- KR/PR
1985- (CHI) Richard Dent- Defensive End
In the other 3 games it was an offensive player that got the MVP. Here is who they were AND more importantly what their defense did to get the ball back for them:
2008- (PIT) Santonio Holmes- WR (2 fumbles, 1 fumble recovery, 2 sacks, 1 interception for a TD and stopped Arizona 3-8 on 3rd down)
2004- (NE) Tom Brady- Quarterback (1 fumble recovery, 4 sacks, stopped Carolina 4-12 on 3rd down AND most importantly stopped the Panthers on back-to-back 2-point conversions)
1990- (NYG) Ottis Anderson- Running back (1 fumble, 1 sack, stopped Buffalo for 1-8 on 3rd down, only allowed the Bills to have 19:27 in time of possession to New York's 44:33)
Phew! A lot of numbers... not convinced? Well, you're most likely still a sour Panthers fan... and in that case I could careless!
Now, as promised, here is the Godfather of Sports' favorite ad of SB 50!
New Cars. Christopher Walken. Sock Puppets... it has it all. Be on the look out for Part III. I will be talking about how the game is be altered and changed from outside the game and how mainstream media is ruining America's pass time.
