Super Bowl XLVIII Pre-Pre-Preview/2013 Rehash Rant
Not too flashy of a title but, then again it is the Super Bowl and it truly needs no introduction. I am going to start this post by saying I (and oddly enough, many others) called SEAvDEN at the start of the year. I don't know what that means, so I am not going to dwell on it... This is NOT my pre-game type blog, this is more just about the Super Bowl itself, and a reflection on the 2013 season. (Don't worry, I will have a in-depth one out shortly)
So, let us start with the basics. This is Super Bowl LVIII which, after Googling it, means Super Bowl 48. Kickoff is set for 6:30pm and it will be on FOX (thank god.) And the NFL thought it was going to be a great idea to host it in East Rutherford, NJ... which according to weather.com... says it is going to be the high of 36 and the low of 24 with a 30% chance of snow WHICH would be great if it was 1940. That is when people went to a game, smoked cigars in the stands, braved the elements and cheered on their team! Now most fans won't go to a game in a slight drizzle because it might water down the fat free Chi Latte or ruin their IPhone 7 or god forbid they eat stadium food that may contain glutens!
In short, I feel like a good chunk of fans (especially Panther fans) couldn't tell you a player on their team's roster other than the last name of the player's name they are wearing...
"Oh, I know one! Um, Newton... Newton... uh... Issac Newton?"
WRONG. Though at least Issac Newton didn't dawn a towel over his head after he failed experiment. Anyone remember Super Bowl XLI in Miami? It 'kind of' rained and people evacuated that stadium like it was Chernobyl 2.0. Now drop it 25+ degrees with a chance of snow... that stadium might end up looking like a Seattle Storm v Denver Chill game... *rim shot* Basically, I am upset because real fans of the teams and the game of football can't get into the game due to the ticket price and travel price. And that the Super Bowl crowd now is more like what you would see at a douchey modern art gallery open or at a wine tour. And the only reason they are there is to 'be seen' and talk to others about their f$%^ hot yoga class. (Ok, I need to take a deep breathe before I pass out.)
Now, let us discuss hitting. This year we learned you can't look a QB weird without getting a 15-yarder and god forbid you try and knock the ball out of a receivers hands before he gets 2 feet in, makes a football move and scores a TD. High scoring games used to be a 'every-so-often' thing that were exciting to watch and talk about... now it has become so common week to week that it has taken the novelty out of it. Here are the facts:
Lastly, I am a fan of Peyton Manning. I think he is a 'fundamental robot' that is worth his contract and then some. But, put him Drew Brees, Andrew Luck, Matt Staford, Tom Brady back in the 70s/80s/early 90s when guys actually "feared the D" they would not be breaking records week in and week out. Yes. They are doing it without performance enhancers but, I think that when we look back at these amazing records... they should read as follows:
Most Touchdowns in a single season
55- Peyton Manning, Denver, 2013*
50- Tom Brady, New England, 2007*
49- Peyton Manning, Indianapolis, 2004
